Dr R J Ewen was born and schooled in Norwich, England and then attended the University of Warwick, where he gained a B.Sc. (Hons) in Physics followed by the University of the West of England, where he was awarded a Ph.D. in Chemical Physics. He worked in scientific research for many years, during which time he co-authored and published over fifty scientific papers, but in his spare time he has greatly enjoyed writing novels and short stories, as well as songs and music.

Now retired, he and his wife live in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, near to their children and grandchildren.
